Making Changes At Home
Mole Valley District Council (MVDC) is committed to helping residents reduce their energy consumption and to promoting and developing transport options which help to reduce CO2 emissions and congestion levels in the district.
The use of energy, in the form of electricity and gas, is a significant contributor of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. You can do your bit by adopting good practice behaviour, which will save energy, reduce carbon dioxide emissions and hopefully save you money too.
One of the most effective ways to reduce your energy consumption is to ensure your house is well insulated. Insulating your home can save you money on your fuel bills and make it a warmer and more comfortable place to be. MVDC's 'Insulation Advice' guide (see 'Downloads') describes the different types of insulation available, the savings that can be made and directs you to some of the funding available to help you insulate your home.
The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) is a new grants programme designed to help homeowners insulate their houses, install efficient heating systems and reduce fuel bills. Grants are available for improvements such as solid wall insulation (houses typically built pre-1930), replacement boilers and double glazing. There are up to 30 improvements that can be funded under ECO. In some instances, this could be entirely funded.
All homeowners living in solid wall properties can be assisted through and those in receipt of qualifying benefits are eligible for the grant. Contact Action Surrey on 0800 783 2503 or email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information and to see if you qualify. Assistance is subject to availability and eligibility.
Visit the Energy Saving Trust website for more information.
Domestic home energy monitors
Domestic home energy monitors are available to borrow from your local library, free of charge. The monitors are easy to install and show you how much electricity you are using in your house at any one time. They are a really useful way to help you reduce the amount of electricity you use - saving you money and reducing your energy bills.
MVDC is committed to promoting and developing transport options which help to reduce CO2 emissions and congestion levels in the district. Transport accounts for a significant proportion of Mole Valley's carbon emissions and MVDC currently monitors levels of air pollution in Dorking.
For more information on pollution levels across London and bordering authorities and to view levels of high pollution, see the London Air website.
There are a number of initiatives and services which can offer green transport options and help support you to travel in a way which will benefit the environment and ensure that the district remains a healthy and beautiful place to live for all residents and future generations.
