Each of the 26 Conservation Areas in Mole Valley has its own distinctive character based on the historic street pattern, open spaces, views, changes in level, and the variety and the scale of buildings. A comprehensive and informative list, Conservation Areas and Descriptions, can be viewed and downloaded (see 'Downloads').
Before carrying out work to a property, it is important that you know whether it is located in a conservation area and whether alterations are also controlled by an Article 4 Direction.
Article 4 Directions
Mole Valley District Council (MVDC) has introduced additional planning controls over change or development in parts of the Dorking, Brockham and Leatherhead Conservation Areas. These controls are referred to as an Article 4 Direction, which are designed to protect features that contribute to the special interest of streets within the Conservation Area (see 'Downloads').
Conservation Area Boundaries and Management Plans
MVDC is responsible for designating conservation areas and reviewing their boundaries. The boundaries of the conservation areas can be viewed by visiting the Conservation Area Maps page (see 'Related Pages').

Appraisals are the basis for making sustainable decisions about the future management of conservation areas, including measures to maintain or improve the positive character, local distinctiveness and a sense of place. Conservation area appraisals for Dorking, Leatherhead, and Great and Little Bookham are available to view and download (see 'Downloads').
Leatherhead Conservation Area Extension
In July 2012, Mole Valley District Council's Executive Committee agreed to extend the boundary of the Leatherhead Conservation Area. The recommendation came from a study commissioned by MVDC to consider the vulnerability of the character of Leatherhead and how the area might be managed to protect what is special.
The boundary was widened to include four small areas:
A statutory notice, Extension of Leatherhead Conservation Area July 2012, listing the properties now included in the Leatherhead Conservation Area is available to view and download (see 'Downloads').
Conservation Area Consent
When a property or site is within a designated conservation area, there are additional planning controls that need to be adhered to in order to preserve and enhance the area. Advice can be found in the Conservation Areas - A Planning Guide document (see 'Downloads'). Additional information can be found by downloading Planning Permission in Conservation Areas (see 'Downloads').
