Public Spaces Protection Order Coming to Meadowbank
Responses to a recent consultation have helped inform the decision to introduce a Public Spaces Protection Order at Meadowbank. Users of the recreation ground in Dorking can look forward to enjoying the open space and exciting range of existing and future facilities in the knowledge that steps have been taken to crack down on anti-social behaviour.
While the number of reports of anti-social behaviour at Meadowbank remains low, because the existing Designated Public Place Order (DPPO) expires on 20 October 2017, residents, businesses and users of Meadowbank were invited to have a say on whether a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) should be introduced to replace it from the time it expires.
Over 250 people completed the consultation and 70% believed that the introduction of a PSPO would have a positive impact on anti-social drinking. Whilst the DPPO placed controls on anti-social drinking, Mole Valley District Council (MVDC) proposed that the PSPO would also place restrictions on dog fouling and dog access into the playground. 65% of respondents considered having a PSPO to regulate dog fouling was a good idea, and 71% wanted restricted dog access into the gated playground.
Councillor Lucy Botting, MVDC's Executive Member for Wellbeing, said: "Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete the public consultation held during July and August. The reported number of instances of anti-social behaviour remains low, but I would like to reassure residents that we will continue to work with our partners and use all our resources and powers to tackle anti-social behaviour.
"I am pleased to announce that we have secured £8,000 from the Police & Crime Commissioner's Office and Surrey County Council's Mole Valley Local Committee to fund new CCTV to supplement the existing cameras in place at Meadowbank. The additional CCTV will only help to deter or identify anyone who breaches the PSPO in the future."
