Forty Foot Playground in Leatherhead Opens

Residents and Local Councillors were invited to the Forty Foot Recreation Ground on Friday 20 October by Mole Valley District Council to celebrate the official opening of the most recently refurbished playground in the district.

The winning Forty Foot playground design was awarded to play company Kompan; a decision informed by the result of two public consultations held in 2017. Work on-site began in September and the playground officially opened on the first day of October half-term. The new and inclusive playground features a range of fun and inclusive features for children of all abilities to enjoy, including: a Sensory garden and sandpit, trampoline, zip wire, lookout tower, talking tubes, double bay swing and visual aid panels.

Mole Valley District Council (MVDC) worked closely with Woodlands School - whose pupils have a range of disabilities and are regular visitors to the Forty Foot Playground - and Communications specialists Tobii Dynavox, prior to installing visual aid panels at Meadowbank. The panels at the Dorking and Forty Foot playgrounds feature a range of play-related pictures to act as visual cues and enable children with communication difficulties to better communicate their play needs to their parent, guardian or other children.

Tina Voizey, Education Manager at Tobii Dynavox, said: "Incorporating communication boards gives everyone the opportunity to express themselves. Something so many children and families take for granted has just become a whole lot easier for those who have speech, language and communication difficulties. We are delighted they have proved to be such a popular addition at Meadowbank".

Councillor Lucy Botting, Executive Member for Wellbeing, said: "The completed Forty Foot playground is another outstanding example of communities helping to shape and enhance play facilities in their local area. We will continue to invest in play provision that is exciting and inclusive, ensuring residents of all abilities and a range of ages have the opportunity to participate in play and wellbeing activities."
